Building a Cel-Shaded BMX Game: Feel Before Features

The first version of a BMX game does not need a huge mountain. It needs one slope that teaches the player how the bike wants to move and gives them a reason to try the line again.

Readability is part of the feel

Cel-shading is not just a surface treatment. The edge between rider, track and background has to stay legible at speed, otherwise the visual style works against the movement.

The current direction keeps the palette simple and uses contrast to make landings, lips and route choices readable before the player has memorised the course.

The next test

The next build is about the landing: how quickly the player understands a clean touch-down, how much forgiveness is useful and where style should come from the player rather than an animation that plays automatically.
